Op-ed: It’s time to bring Pavlov back

On 8 July it will mark eight years since a Dutch university student founded the Kingdom of Pavlov: an Antarctic micronation inspired by Russian cultural heritage.

Most micronations go into oblivion within a year after foundation, as their mastermind loses interest and opts for another hobby. Some survive for longer, but usually don’t go past school and university projects and fall into inactivity when their active citizens graduate. It takes serious motivation, efforts and skills to keep the micronation running and avoid its collapse due to inactivity or infighting.

Out of those micronations that survive the purgatory of graduation, most have little presence outside the internet, and only selected few develop a unique and recognizable culture.

Pavlov was among those few. Its vitality and cultural identity was so strong, that even now — three years after dissolution! — Pavlovian ghost still haunts the micronational community, and the Pavlovian anniversary celebrated in 2015 still remains the largest micronational event ever hosted in Russia.

Pavlov had a unique ability to not leave anyone indifferent. During the time that it existed, it was virtually impossible to find micronationalist who heard of it and didn’t develop a strong opinion: everyone either adored it, or hated vehemently. What is it, if not evidence of the enormous cultural and societal impact Pavlov had left on the micronational community? And what was the secret of this impact, of a young and relatively small micronation?

Micronations are the refuge of idealists. A typical micronation starts as a better, almost utopian alternative to a society its founders belong to, undaunted by corruption, inequality and social stratification. Driven by a desire to fix the imperfection of this world, newbie micronationalists genuinely want the best for the community — but their youthful idealism gets smashed to flinders as they discover that the micronational world is just as corrupt as the macronational one, only that the stage is smaller and small players loom bigger.

Then they start YAMOs. Out of good intentions, of course — not because they want to irritate the community or repeat the mistakes of others. They genuinely, sincerely believe that this time it’s going to be different, that the micronational world suffers from a lack of unity and they have a cure to fix it. And when it fails, they either leave micronationalism disillusioned, or turn into cynics and alcoholics.

Pavlov was already founded by cynics and alcoholics. “I know the world — it’s old and full of rotter”, goes the poem by Ukrainian Oleg Ładyżeński, which perfectly illustrates the spirit embodied by Pavlov. The founders of Pavlov were convinced that this world is bad, will only be getting worse, and there’s no point in trying to build yet another utopia which has no chances of ever becoming a reality.

And so they did something completely different. Rather than marketing Pavlov as yet another liberal paradise, they gave potential citizens an opportunity to get immersed in a faraway era that few would like to live in, but many would want to experience.

The superficial ultraconservatism of Pavlov, implemented as part of re-enacting the culture of medieval Rus’, was in reality much more liberal than many ostensibly “open-minded” micronational projects. This micronation, where shaving was illegal and adhering to any religion other than Pavlovian Orthodoxy was punishable by exile, was rife with clean-shaven Catholics, Muslims, pagans and staunch atheists. Pavlovian laws, far from being tolerant and progressive, paradoxically created a community so attractive that people of completely opposite political and religious backgrounds would join it and drop their feuds once they become members.

Pavlov’s claim to be the Fourth Rome, while originally of tongue-in-cheek nature, turned into an accurate description of this community: just like the original Roman Empire albeit on a smaller scale Pavlov managed to create an all-encompassing indentity superceding the original backgrounds of its citizens.

In a liberal micronation, liberals remain liberals. In a conservative micronation, conservatives also remain who they are.

In Pavlov, which was not on the political compass, but above and beyond it, and perhaps in a whole other societal dimension, liberals, conservatives, Christians, Muslims, pagans and staunch atheists turned into Pavlovians, whose previous background remained outside of the micronation. Just like in the Roman Empire, where residents assumed a new Roman identity which became primary.

The void left after Pavlov’s dissolution has yet to be filled. No other micronation managed to recreate the unique-in-all-creation Pavlovian mix of satire and reality, where the Grand Inquisitor is a practicing Muslim and part-time Lama; where a communist is granted the title of Baron of Hammer-and-Sickle; where a Christian micronation which banned atheism hosts a summit with an atheist micronation which banned religion, and enters an alliance with it.

Three Romes have fallen. The Fourth Rome still lives in our souls, and the people associated with it still maintain regular contact with each other.

Why don’t we try and finally bring it back?

Aleksandropil becomes newest province of Pavlov

On 8 March, the leadership of the newly-created territory Aleksandropil ratified its treaty of annexation with Pavlov.

The territory of Aleksandropil was founded on the day of the ratification of the treaty, by His Illustriousness Count Kristijan Karolovych Nevtonenko. Count Nevtonenko, who is Polkovnyk of the Royal Guard and was recently appointed Director of the Pavlovian Language Department of the University of St. Ahmet the Caligrapher, was granted his noble title following the ratification of the treaty and appointed Governor. The territory is named in honour of His Majesty the Tsar and Grand Prince, may the Almighty God bless his reign. Geographically, the territory is a city-state and located in the United States of America.

In an exclusive interview, His Majesty the Tsar and Grand Prince, may the Almighty God bless his reign, has spoken to the Pravda about his views on the recent annexation of his new territory.

Interview with His Majesty the Tsar and Grand Prince Alexander Feofanovič IV, may the Almighty God bless his reign

Q: It is an honour to meet you Your Majesty (MAGBYR), thank you for taking your time to interview us.
A: The pleasure is truly Ours, We were delighted to be invited here to speak of these matters.
Q: Your Majesty (MAGBYR), what do you think of your new realm?
A: For starters We must say that We are quite happy with the amount of growth Pavlov has had so far since the rebirth in early february of this year. Aleksandropil, is a completely new state which has joined us without any pre-existance. We look forward to establish it together with His Illustriousness the Count Nevtonenko
Q: Are you honoured by the fact that the Governor of the province named it after you?
A: This honestly is a non-question, We are obviously honoured that it was named after Ourself. We will pray to almighty God in order for him to forgive our vain and prideful feelings.
Q: What plans does the local government of Aleksandropil have in regards to furthering Pavlov?
A: Honestly We are afraid this is a question for the Governor-General to answer, not for Ourself.
Q: Do you hope to expand Pavlov further?
A: To be frank, the goals in regards to growth are not really defined with the exception of Hasanistan. We must somehow negotiate a deal with the Hasani government regardig this.
Q: Well thank you for the interview, Your Majesty (MAGBYR). I hope we will have the honour of hosting an interview with you again in the future.

Microflag appointed court supplier; Count Nevtonenko appointed Director of the Pavlovian Language Department

Today, His Majesty Tsar and Grand Prince Alexander Feofanovič, may the almighty God bless his Reign, signed a decree officially establishing Microflag (a small Muscovia-based enterprise whose commitment is to provide custom flags with no minimal quota and the lowest price on the market) as the court supplier of printing material of the Tsardom.

This move is made on the eve of a possible cooperation between Microflag and the Tsarist Government for the creation of HM’s Post Service and Identification cards for Pavlovian subjects.

It furthermore appoints His Illustriousness Count Kristijan Karolovych Nevtonenko as Director of the Pavlovian Language Department of the University of St. Ahmet the Caligrapher. It is expected that the Department will progress on the creation of the Pavlovian language, a language trying to re-construct Old East Slavonic in a working manner.

Pavle Savovic anathematised and excommunicated

Yesterday, the Austenasian regime removed Daniel Dankovsky from their Parliament due to his “racist” attitude and views. Following his removal, Dankovsky came to His Majesty the Tsar and Grand Prince (may the almighty God bless his Reign) and offered the defection of his territory inside Austenasia (known as Jovanovo) to Pavlov.

As mentioned, Dankovsky is not a newly-discovered individual to either His Majesty the Tsar and Grand Prince (may the almighty God bless his Reign) or many members of His Majesty’s government. Dankovsky himself was once a Pavlovian citizen, knight and member of the Pavlovian government, rather under a different name. “Dankovsky” is simply an alias of the infamous traitor and crypto-communist infiltator Pavle Savovic. Savovic’s crimes against the Pavlovian nation are as follows:

  • September 2016: Violating the terms of a treaty that established Akebar (which he temporarily lead the time) as a vassal state of Pavlov. Planning to use Pavlov as a “base” for his planned attacks on various micronations.
  • November 2016: Launching “military actions” against other entities in his capacity as governor of a Pavlovian province without the approval of the Pavlovian government.
  • December 2016: Launching a separatist uprising in the province of Daljam, to establish an independent Pavlist dictatorship.

For this reason, Metropolitan Filaret Hasanovič has issued a document denouncing Pavle Savovic to anathema and excommunicating him.

THE METROPOLITAN OF KOLCHAKSARAY AND OF ALL PAVLOV
FILARET

In the Name of the Almighty Father,

The Father Almighty, the maker of the Seven Heavens and Earth, of things visible and invisible, who, in His infinite mercy, hath sent his Only-Begotten Son Jesus Christ to Calvary, for the salvation of us sinners, spoke to us through His Divine Messengers: “The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” (John 10:10)

All pious, God-Fearing believers would ensure to follow such a Noble Commandment of the Almighty God, who alone shall be worshipped, to attain the Holy Reward in Paradise, as stated in the Holy Books such as when one Book stated “and then he shall reward every man according to his works” (Matthew 16:27) or another stated “Nay, but whosoever surrendereth his purpose to God while doing good, his reward is with his Lord; and there shall no fear come upon them neither shall they grieve” (Final Testament 2:112). However, as the Almighty God has granted man the freedom of his choice to see how he handles the Test of Life, many unbelievers and so-called “believers” who are in truth hypocrites use the gift of choice that He has given us (the creation made in the Image of Adam) to live a life of sin and avoid the teachings of the Noble Holy Books. One such example is the philanderer, backbiter, traitor and collaborationist with enemies of the Almighty God and the unbelievers and the sinners known by the name of Pavle Savovic, an individual who has defied the teachings of the Almighty God, who made the Flat Earth and the Seven Heavens in six days when He stated “Let Their Be Light” and there was light, and who promotes an ideology inspired by the murderers Ioseb Jughashvili, Josip Broz Tito and Slobodan Milošević.

The hypocrite hides behind the false pseudonym of Daniel Dankovsky, to hide his sins from the true and pious Sheep of God and to trick them into falsely following him, however they know that they shall only follow the Almighty God, as stated in one of the Noble Holy Books when it is said “Thou shalt fear the Lord thy God, and serve him, and shalt swear by his name” (Deuteronomy 6:13 ), and even the fool Savovic must know deep down that his laughable pseudonyms will not hide him from the Almighty God who is all-knowing and all-seeing, as stated in one of the Holy Books as “For his eyes are upon the ways of man, and he seeth all his goings” (Job 34:21) or in other as “Lo! my Lord is tender unto whom He will. He is the Knower, the Wise” (Final Testament 12:100).

It should be known that the fool Savovic has attempted revolution more than once to spread his delusional ideology against His Majesty Aleksandr Feofanovič, to Christ Our God Faithful, Tsar and Grand Prince of all Pavlov, of All, the Great, the Little, the White and the Pavlovian Rus’ Autocrat (May the Almighty God Bless His Reign), a leader ordained by the Almighty Father to rule on His behalf. Such an action is against the teachings of Him, as stated by one of His Messengers and the Thirteenth Apostle of the Son when he stated “Whoever rebels against the Oecumene (Realm of Believers), killing good and evil people alike, and does not try to avoid killing the believers, and does not pay attention to those who are under a covenant, then he is not of me” (Sunan an-Nasa’i Book 37, Hadith 4119). The Thirteenth Apostle also mentioned this when he stated “Whoever bears weapons against us, he is not one of us.” (Sunan an-Nasa’i Book 37, Hadith 4105). The foolish terrorist and philanderer Savovic has attempted these rebellions, against the will of He who made the seen and unseen, to spread an ideology he states in is in His Name. By Savovic’s own words, he fantasises about an “Orthodox Christian communist state”. However, all pious, God-fearing believers know the truth of this fool and his aspirations for his own cult of personality, as he has established whenever given the chance, something which the Almighty Lord, who breathed the souls of all man into each of us with a single blow, regards as idolatry, a sin as stated when the Holy Book said “Turn ye not unto idols, nor make to yourselves molten gods: I am the Lord your God” (Leviticus 19:4).

As Pavle Savovic, or his pseudonym of Daniel Dankovsky, has defied the teachings of the Only God, the maker of the Seven Heavens and Earth, of things visible and invisible, who, in His infinite mercy, hath sent his Only-Begotten Son Jesus Christ to Calvary, for the salvation of us sinners, in accordance with the Holy Scripture, and the Apostolic Canon LXXXIV: “Whosoever shall insult the King, or a ruler, contrary to what is right, let him suffer punishment. If he be a clergyman, let him be deposed; if a layman, excommunicated”, I, the unworthy Metropolitan of Kolchaksaray, in exercise of my authority ordained by the Almighty and Merciful God Himself, excommunicate Pavle Savovic. and all his pseudonyms, in the name of the Almighty Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, and condemn him to eternal anathema. Be it known to all the Faithful, that whoever prays with the philanderer Pavle Savovic, shall be alienated, anathematised and excommunicated from the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church, in accordance with the Apostolic Canon X: “If any one shall pray, even in a private house, with an excommunicated person, let him also be excommunicated”.

Oh Almighty God, hasten the arrival of Your Kingdom! Defend the weak, console the sorrowful, strengthen the armour of the Knights of Christendom, punish the infidels, execute justice and cast the blasphemer into the abysmal of inferno, for You Alone we worship and sing to Your Glory!

Signed by Filaret, Metropolitan of Kolchaksaray and of All Pavlov, in the city of Voronhorod, in the 3rd year of the reign of His Majesty the Tsar and Grand Prince of the Pavlovian Rus’ Aleksandr Feofanovič.

Pavlovian Rus’ honour system re-established

Yesterday, present members of the Veche unanimously agreed to pass the Act on the Pavlovian Rus’ Nobility that re-established the honour system of Pavlov.

Within the Act, many historical noble titles and awards of Pavlov were recreated. These included the Orders of Tsar Simeon Bekbulatovich, Saint Volodymyr the Baptizer and the Flat Earth, their ranks, the ranks of the nobility. A new order has also been created, the Order of the Poppy. The Act also formalised the styles by which the nobles of different ranks shall be addressed.

The current Posadnik, Prince Krishtof Slavomirovic Drakonov,  and his family were classified as Titled Nobility within the Act, and granted the title of Prince and the style of His Serenity.

Interview with His Serenity Posadnik Drakonov

Q: Hello Your Serenity Posadnik, thanks for the interview. Do you think it was a good idea to re-establish honour system?
A: Yes, Our realm needs a measure that formalises hierarchy and order, and we needed a way to reward our best subjects for their possible honorous actions.
Q: Do you believe the re-establishment of honour system will bring more interest to Pavlov?
A: Yes I believe so, as well as I hope so. Our realm finally has the instrument to reward a great talent, and I believe that our realm under the leadership of our Great Tsar, May God Bless his Reign, has a great ability of recognizing such talents
Q: In addition to many old orders being recreated, a new order has been made called the Order of the Poppy. Can you tell us more about this new order?
A: It’s an order that is “granted for military or civil achievements”, with the recent reform of our army, I believe that this order will find it’s way to many great recipents
Q: What do you think of the rights granted to nobles by His Majesty Tsar (may the almighty God bless his Reign)?
A: I personally think that they are just, as they should be. And I hope that they will be obeyed correctly
Q: You have been classified as a Titled Noble. How do you feel about this?
A: I am really delighted of renewal of this status within the realm, and I am really thankful to our Tsar, May Almighty God Bless his Reign for granting me this title again.
Q: Thank you for your time, Your Serenity. Good luck and hopefully you serve His Majesty, may the almighty God bless his Reign, well.

Tsar renames House to Groznookov

Today, His Majesty Tsar and Grand Prince Alexander Feofanovič, may the almighty God bless his Reign, signed a decree officially renaming the Royal House of Pavlov the “House of Karapavlovič” to the “House of Groznookov” (in English: the Fearsome eyes).

According to HM’s decree this was done in order to adopt a suitable House name for Our reigning House. The choice for this name was taken from the sobriquet from two predecessors of HM, the most famous being Dmitry of Tver, famous for stabbing his competitor for the title of Grand Prince of Vladimir at the capital of the Khan in Sarai.

Nevtonenko appointed Polkovnyk of the Royal Guard, Jovanov appointed Chief Oprichnik

Today, His Majesty Tsar and Grand Prince Alexander Feofanovič, may the almighty God bless his Reign, signed two decrees appointing Kristijan Karolovych Nevtonenko and Nikola Sladanovič Jovanov to the posts of Polkovnyk of the Royal Guard and Chief Oprichnik respectively.

The first decree on the appointment of Nevtonenko to the Royal Guard also envisioned the creation of the Sts Borys and Khlib Polk as the prime regiment of the honorary Guard. While Pavlov has a position of neutrality in foreign conflicts, it maintains a ceremonial guard.

The second decree appoints Jovanov to the post of Chief Oprichnik, effectively re-establishing the Royal Oprichnina. The Royal Oprichnina’s goals are to monitor internal- and external threats to the National security of Pavlov as well as to partake in (counter-)espionage.

Bekbulatovich beatified; Akebar formally annexed

Today, Simeon Bekbulatovich has been beatified as a Royal Passion-Bearer by Pavlovian Orthodox Church Metropolitan Filaret.

The decision to beatify Bekbulatovich, a former Grand Prince of all-Russia and an ancestor of the Tsar Aleksandr IV, may the Almighty God bless his reign, was made to honour his service to Christendom and the Rus’ nation. Many good deeds have been stated as the reason for his beatification, including his devotion to seeking knowledge of the word of the God and Christ in his later life to his conversion to Christianity in his earlier years.

In other news, a few days ago the treaty of annexation of Akebar was formalised between the Pavlovian and Akebarian governments. This means that Akebar has officially returned to Pavlov as a province.

Akebar, a former territory of the past incarnation of Pavlov, had been in talks with the Pavlovian government for re-integration since early February. The Akebarian government, while retaining a lot of elements of its current culture, has also agreed to reform its culture to be more in line with the rest of Pavlov (a process being referred to as Ukrainization or Pavlovization). Robert Vinstonovič Gjarsijtyev, the former leader of Akebar, has been appointed Governor.

Drakonov elected as Posadnik; vote on Akebar held

Yesterday, the election for the Posadnik was held after its rescheduling. A vote in the Veche has also been held today, in regard to the re-annexation of the former Pavlovian territory of Akebar.

The election for the Posadnik was rescheduled to 12 February because of the many issues being raised recently and the need for a stable government to discuss them. The acting Posadnik Krishtof Slavomirovič Drakonov was the only candidate for the election and was unanimously supported by all Veche members present. Posadnik Drakonov has given an interview with the Pavlovian Pravda that can be seen below.

Today, present Veche members unanimously agreed to approve an Akebarian request for re-annexation. The leader of Akebar, a former territory of Pavlov’s last incarnation, made the request a couple of days ago after he learned of Pavlov’s re-establishment. Despite the vote, the re-annexation itself has not been formalized yet, as the current draft of the annexation treaty made by the Pavlovian government has yet to be reviewed by the Akebarians.

In other news, the Veche has also received a new logo which was designed by His Majesty, may the almighty God bless his Reign, himself. The logo is a minimalist logo featuring the Pohonia, the mounted knight which serves as a symbol of many Slavs, in a Pavlovian blue outline.

Interview with Posadnik Drakonov
Q: Hello Prince Drakonov, thanks for the interview. What do you think of re-establishment of Pavlov?
A: I am very glad of this decision, and now with the title of Posadnik I feel that my gladness has doubled, honestly. At first I was reluctant to join because I didn’t believe that I would be active in Pavlovian politics, but now with my title I feel the duty to be active and fully participate.
Q: What are your plans for Pavlov?
A: I am going to work together with the Tsar and the entirety of Veche on ensuring that our Nation gets more citizens, expands in size, and prospers both internally – that means that we will have a population that is active in Pavlovian way of life, but also externally – gaining more prestige for our Nation.
Q: What is your ideal goal for Pavlov?
A: To have a thriving community that is constantly facing new challenges, and succeding in them, and also keep expanding the numbers of our population and the borders of our realm. Promoting the Pavlovian culture and traditions inside and outside of our Nation. To forge a bigger status within the micronational community upon the pillars that have been already built.
Q: Thank you for your time, Prince Drakonov. Good luck and hopefully you serve His Majesty, may the almighty God bless his Reign, well.

New Metropolitan appointed; Posadnik elections announced

Yesterday, His Majesty Tsar and Grand Prince Alexander Feofanovič, may the almighty God bless his Reign, appointed Hasan Hasanovič Tsakarin as the Metropolitan of Kolchaksaray and all-Rus’ following discussions regarding changes to the Pavlovian Orthodox Church.

The decision came after Tsakarin announced his interest in the position to His Majesty yesterday. Tsakarin has assumed the name Filaret, a name meaning “virtuous friend” and being held by many Slavic patriarchs before. As well as the appointment of a new Metropolitan, a new creed has been adopted by the Pavlovian Orthodox Church. The creed is very similar to the Church’s previous creed, the Niceno-Constantinopolo-Aleksandropolitan creed, but includes various new including the mention of Heaven being split into seven layers and a figure known as the Mehdi. The full creed reads:

“There is no God but God, the Father Almighty, the maker of the Seven Heavens and Earth, of things visible and invisible, the Only God. The Lord Jesus Christ, His only Son, begotten not made, to the Father, by whom the Earth, the Seven Heavens and all between were made; Who for mankind, and for our salvation, came down from Heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Ghost and of the Virgin Mary, and was made man;
Who was crucified for mankind under Pontius Pilate, and suffered, and was buried, and the Third Day he rose again and ascended above the Seven Heavens, and sat on the right hand of the Father; Who thence shall come again with glory together with the Mehdi and mercy judge the living and the dead, of whose Kingdom there shall be no end, and who shall be hosted by the Tsar. And mankind shall believe in the Holy Ghost, the Lord and Giver of life, the Almighty Father, and the Begotten Son, who together as One God in Trinity, and Trinity in Unity, are to be adored and glorified, who spoke by the prophets Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and the Tribes, and that what was given to Moses and Muhammad, of their Lord. And we believe in the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. We confess one baptism for the remission of sins and we look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come.
Amen.”

It is expected in the coming weeks that the Church will decide on the adoption of new heraldry and discuss reforms to its organizational structure.
In other news, currently acting Posadnik Krishtof Slavomirovič Drakonov announced that an election to choose a new Posadnik shall take place. The Posadnik of the Veche, formerly known as the Chairman and the First Minister, is the head of the Pavlovian legislature. Drakonov is currently the only individual who has declared his candidacy so far, although other figures such as Asghar Nazemovič Rzayev have been tipped as potential contenders. The members of the Veche shall elect a new Posadnik on the Gregorian date of 17 February.
